Is “New Year, New You” Even Possible?

The most popular phrase on television, radio, and every social media channel this week seems to be “New Year, New You!” Car companies, gyms and retailers are touting their products as the solution to your New Year’s resolutions. To me, this seems a little overwhelming.

I’ve been the old me for more than 38 years! Do you really think it’s possible to flip a switch at midnight and become the new me?

Still, the phrase often convinces us that we can flip the switch and become a new version of ourselves. So, we buy the car, the gym membership and the Apple Watch (to wear at the gym of course) as we chase the new version. Soon after, “buyer’s remorse” sets in. Self doubt invades the hopeful space where personal change once dwelled. We think, “I can’t really change,” and within two months, our resolutions dissolve like snow in the spring warmth.

The problem: Big change is hard.

The Answer: Micro-habits

In 2018, let’s take a different approach to big change. Instead of attempting to “flip the switch” when the crystal ball hits the rooftop in Times Square, I want you to consider making small consistent changes to your daily routines to accomplish the big goals. We call these shifts- “micro-habits.” If you want better health in 2018, start with the micro-habit of drinking eight extra ounces of water every day for one week. The next week, drink 16 extra ounces. This micro habit is both measurable and attainable and leads to a sense of accomplishment. Of course, increased water intake isn’t the only key to a healthier you, but it’s a strong step in the right direction.

While health goals are certainly the most popular New Year’s resolutions, there are plenty of other “new yous” we pursue. What’s awesome is that micro-habits are applicable to every goal from finances to relationships and career growth.

Before the clock strikes midnight tonight, consider the “big changes” you’d like to make in 2018. Then, take the time to unpack the micro-habits you can practice daily that will result in a powerful and lasting impact on your life.

They may even make the New You possible!
